Covoid 19 – Coping Tips for Writers

Covoid 19 is a particular challenge for writers and artists.

Writers usually work from home or from a cafe.

To combat isolation many of us like to meet up for coffee with friends.

Covoid 19 has put an end to that here in Ireland, with many of our cafes, restaurants and even pubs closed.

We are encouraged to practice social distance for the duration of the Covoid 19 crisis and so gatherings are now few and far between.

So what else can we do?

  1. Stop texting and phone a friend for a chat. Honestly, it’s much nicer and your friends will be glad to hear a friendly voice.
  2. Arrange to meet a friend for a walk. Do not shake hands or hug! You can walk and talk comfortably while still maintaining social distance – 2 meters (6.5 feet) between you and other people.
  3. Volunteer to collect shopping for a vulnerable neighbour. Again – chat while maintaining social distance.
  4. Try an online yoga class – This one only takes ten minutes.
  5. Try a creative writing exercise and arrange with a writer friend to give each other some constructive feedback.
  6. Play your favourite music or try this calming meditation from Sam Harris.
  7. I know some countries are advising their citizens to stay inside but if you can get outside – make sure you walk every day; the woods, parks, the seaside! Wherever you can find that isn’t crowded so you can still make sure you keep that all-important 2 meters (6.5 feet) between you and passersby.
  8. If you would like to go on a virtual woodland walk you can always visit my children’s nature education website at www.ballyyahoo.com.
  9. Declutter – is your writing space a mess? Well, this is something you can fix! Without our gyms, classes, jobs, cafes, gatherings and pubs to go to we have more time – so you can make your writing space as cosy and welcoming as you always wanted. I like the decluttering tips here on The Spruce site.
  10. Write a ‘lucky list.’ It’s so easy to forget that those of us who have a roof over our heads and something to eat every day are actually very lucky.

I really hope this helps you get through these uncertain times.

Take care of yourselves
