Writing bursts are one of the best ways of developing a writing habit and breaking down writer’s block.
Writing bursts are short bursts of writing where you write:
As much as you can.
As fast as you can.
You do this for short periods of time using a timer.
You could use your phone or a kitchen timer to set the number of minutes you want to use creatively.
Or you could even try the Pomerado technique – something I use and have found great for increasing creative productivity.
Writing bursts work because writing fast under time pressure prevents your mental editor from kicking in and stopping you.
Our mental editor often throws up negative thoughts which tell us there is no point, or we’re not good enough, no-one will read this etc.
Staring at a blank screen wondering what to write about is the best way to allow the negative mental editor to kick in.
So, if you use an exercise or decide on a piece of writing you want to progress you’ve already eliminated the blank screen.
You can choose to set a timer for 10, 5 or even 2 minutes – whatever you like.
Plan your writing bursts for a time when you know you have a few minutes to spare.
Pick an exercise or piece of writing you want to develop, set your timer and then go for it.
For motivation – read this.
If you don’t know what to write – try some of these exercises. You’ll never regret spending a little time writing but you might regret that time you spent mindlessly trawling social media.
Best of luck with your writing.
