Make a firm decision to write regularly.

Decide that you will make time to write and do it!

It doesn’t matter whether it’s every single day or twice a week as long as you make a firm decision.

Writing regularly is key.

If you are short on time find out how to make the best use of available time here.

How to Increase Your Creativity in Five Easy Steps

1. Allow yourself to free flow.

Whether you are a beginner writer or further along the writing path one of the easiest things to do is to allow your thoughts flow freely onto a page.

It doesn’t matter what you write at this stage as long as you write something – anything that comes to mind.

Allow ten to fifteen minutes to do this and simply enjoy the process.

This little exercise will do two things: it will help you to build the habit of writing and will stimulate ideas.

This door can be anywhere – perhaps in a deserted house or a secret gate in an unknown garden.

Imagine yourself opening the door or gate and walking through it to the other side.

Then write what you see, who you see, what you hear, what you smell and how it makes you feel.

This creative journey will expand your imagination.

3. Think back to childhood and find one of your happiest memories.

Childhood was a time when most of us were free to be creative and we can harness that childlike state of mind with thought.

Think back and describe your happiest memory. What was the weather like? Who was there? Where where you? What happened?

This exercise will you help to frame your experience as though you were an onlooker or narrator and build on your descriptive writing skills.

This may seem like a negative exercise but it is a great way to overcome the mental obstacles that prevent us fulfilling our creative dreams.

For example, if your problem is confidence you can write about what it is that makes you feel less confident.

Then you can write about the reasons why this will not stop you. Do the same with any other obstacles you feel are getting in the way of writing.

5. Write as though no-one will ever read it.

When I started writing the thing that scared me and stopped me the most was the fear of being judged.

The thought of family and friends reading my writing really scared me. Would I be embarrassed? Would they?

All writers face this challenge and the best way I know of overcoming it is to tell yourself that nobody will ever read it anyway.

This takes away that pressure.

You and you alone are completely in control.

Later it is only you who can decide whether to show it to anyone and only you can decide who to show it to.

This is how I overcame my own fears.

Soon I was able to write regularly and fearlessly. I wrote whenever I could and I wrote whatever I wanted. This freedom to write helped build by writing confidence while I developed my skills.

I urge you to do the same.

Writers need inspiration but more than that we need some freedom.

Best of luck.

Grace
