Inspirational poems – persist

Cover of Practical Creative Writing book on a post about Inspirational PoemsInspirational poems can lift your spirits when you are feeling low.

One of my favourite inspiring poems is the one below. It is called Persist by John Greenleaf Whittier.

In any writer’s life there will be ups and downs and sometimes it can seem that there are more downs than ups.

We can struggle with motivation.

One day we can wake up feeling that we can’t wait to sit down and write while other days we find ourselves struggling – with our inner critic banging away in our head – telling us not to write, telling us we’re not good enough.

Don’t ever let this stop you.

Remember thoughts are meaningless. Ignore the inner critic – it’s not important.

We all have struggles and you can read about mine here.

What matters is that you keep going – no matter what.

Never give up.

If you are struggling with motivation, you will find this post here very helpful.

PERSIST

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,

when the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,

when the funds are low and the debts are high,
and you want to smile, but you have to sigh,

when care is pressing you down a bit,

Rest, if you must – but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
as every one of us sometimes learns,

And many a failure turns about,

when he might have won had he stuck it out,

don’t give up, though the pace seems slow.

You might succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than
it seems to a faint and faltering man.

Often the struggler has given up,

when he might have captured the victor’s cup,

and learned too late, when the night slipped down,

how close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out.

The silver tint to the clouds of doubt and you can never tell how close you are.

It may appear when it seems afar.

So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit.
it’s when things seem worst that you mustn’t quit!

Persist was written by John Greenleaf Whittier (1807 – 1892)
