Writing in the Sun

buttercups illustrating an article about writing in the sunAre you writing in the sun?

I am – let me explain:  we are enjoying a very unusual and very hot 31 degrees here in Galway and the sky is a beautiful blue.

This makes a welcome change from the grey clouds and rain.

I am usually prone to a bit of seasonal affective disorder but thankfully not right now.

Some writers find that sunshine helps their creativity – the lucky ones even spend their winters in hot countries – I’m not that lucky but I’m certainly making the most of the sun while it’s here.

It’s true what they say about the sunshine and writing though. Right now I’m bursting with ideas and my ideas book is filling up.  By the way, if you find yourself stuck for ideas – this post will help.

It’s rare that I get the opportunity to spend some time writing outside in the sunshine and despite having to slather myself in factor 30 sun protection to avoid burning my pale face it’s a real joy.

I know from the letters I receive that some of you suffer from writer’s block but if it’s sunny where you live have you tried taking your work outside?

Even if it’s not sunny you can still benefit from changing where you write.

If you always write in the same room, using the same chair, desk or table, you might find it helpful to ring the changes.

Try spending a morning in the lobby of a local hotel – treat yourself to a nice cup of coffee or tea and settle down to write.

The change of location can stimulate the mind and eliminate the temptations you face when working at home.

If you are working from home you’ll know exactly what I mean – we’ve all had days where we intended to spend three hours writing and instead spent three hours cleaning the kitchen.

Taking yourself away from the home can eliminate this temptation and defining a time and place to write will help stop your procrastination.

I hope you try these ideas and would love to hear how you get on – so let me know in the comments box below or drop me an email. I’m always happy to hear from writers.

Best of luck

Grace
